Retreating monsoon runs into rough weather

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , Oct. 4

AS with the onset phase, the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon also has run into some rough weather with live weather systems in the east and west intervening.

A weather update by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) said Monday's well-marked low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh lay weakened as a conventional low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal. The associated upper air cyclonic circulation extended up to mid-tropospheric levels.

Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall with heavy falls is likely over West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya during the next 2-3 days. The wet weather is likely to increase over Bihar and Jharkhand, two met divisions where monsoon has been deficient right through the season.

Rain/thundershowers are likely at a few places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and isolated over Orissa. Weather may be mainly dry over east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Rainfall activity over Gangetic West Bengal is expected to decrease after 24 hours.

On the western flank, an upper air cyclonic circulation lay positioned over southeast Arabian Sea and neighbourhood extending to 1.5-3.1 km above sea level. This is expected to bring scattered rainfall to the North Konkan coast. Isolated rains are expected over Madhya Maharashtra. Mainly dry weather is likely to prevail over the rest of the areas in the region.

In the north, a western disturbance as an upper air system was positioned over north Pakistan and its neighbourhood. This may cause isolated rainfall activity over Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. But northwest India and parts of central and west India may continue to witness mainly dry weather conditions for the next 4-5 days.

Isolated rains are expected in the southern parts of the country. Rainfall activity over Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to perk up over the short term. Rain/ thundershowers are likely at many places over Nicobar Islands and at a few places over Andaman Islands, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Isolated rain/thundershowers are likely over south coastal Andhra Pradesh after 24 hours.
