`.org' registrations up 31 per cent in Jan-Sept

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 4

THE number of domain names registered under `.org' in India grew 31 per cent between January and September surpassing the growth rate in the US market, although India accounts for only 0.9 per cent of the four million domain names registered worldwide under `.org'.

"We are focusing on India in a big way as the country has a large number of non-profit organisations and has the fastest growing technology infrastructure. It also has the fastest growing middle-class community which provides support to non-profit organisations," Mr Edward G. Viltz, President and CEO of Public Interest Registry, said here.

`.org' is the Internet home of non-commercial organisations, including non-profit and non-governmental organisations, philanthropies, charities, religious organisations, educational and cultural institutions, arts organisations, sports clubs, and others, who create `.org' Web sites and e-mail addresses.

Public Interest Registry (PIR) manages the `.org' top-level domain name and maintains the database of all `.org' Internet addresses.

Mr Viltz, who is currently in India to hard-sell the concept of `.org' and promote its awareness amongst Indian non-profit organisations through seminars scheduled in different parts of the country including Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai, said that US currently accounts for 65 per cent of the four million `.org' domain names, while Europe accounts for 25 per cent.

"In absolute terms India has 33,000 domain name registrations in `.org', but the growth rate stands at about 31 per cent between January and now.

In the case of US, the growth rate is close to 23 per cent," he said.

China and Korea have about 47,000 `.org' domain names.

He said India currently has six registrars for `.org' domain name registrations, but added that 20 applications were in different stages of approval.
