MCF mulls switching to LNG

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: The high cost in the production of urea in the naphtha-based plants seems to have made the Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) to think about switching over to an LNG-based plant.

The company, which is revamping the plant at Panamubur in Mangalore at a cost of Rs 200 core, is also planning to invest around Rs 300 crore on the LNG-based urea plant.

Mr P.C. Jain, Director (Works) of MCF, told newspersons here on Tuesday that the LNG-based plant could be run efficiently for another 20 years without any problem.

Stating that the company would complete the revamping work by March 2006, he said it may consider investing Rs 300 crore in the LNG-based plant after that. He hoped that the LNG-based plant could be operational by 2008.

"We are waiting for the LNG terminal to come up in Mangalore," Mr Jain said. It may be mentioned here that the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has plans to set up an LNG terminal in the proposed special economic zone in Mangalore.
