Coonoor , Oct. 5 AROUND 15 tea factories in the private small scale sector called bought leaf factories have closed their operations in the Nilgiris, according to the Tea Board. "I heard that they are closed because they are unable to run any more with the coarse green leaf which they had been using as the raw material so far because of our action to prevent such functioning," said Mr R.D. Nazeem, Executive Director, Tea Board. Delivering the Chief Guest address at the AGM of the Nilgiri Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers' Association here, he said the closure as also the action being taken by the Tea Board in preventing the production of poor grades of tea were causing inconvenience to some, but even they welcomed in the overall interest of the industry. . Although the Board had fixed October 2 as the last date before which the factories should get rid of the poor quality leaves, on the representation received from the industry, the Board would not plunge into immediate action. "We understand your situation that arising from the rush crop, there is still some stock of the old leaves. Please get rid of them and stop buying coarse leaves. Already, improvements were being seen, he said.
