Roadways Transporters' strike hits JNPT operations Our Bureau
Mumbai , Oct. 5 OPERATIONS at Jawaharlal Nehru port were affected on Wednesday, following an indefinite strike by the 12 unions representing the transport operators at the port. They were protesting against the decision to collect toll charges on every truck that enters or exits the port along the 26-km road that links the port with the Pune expressway. The Union Minister of Shipping, Mr T.R. Baalu, who was in Mumbai in connection with the International Maritime Expo, appealed to the transport operators to withdraw their strike. He assured the striking unions that he would "amicably settle the problem within a month." The transport operators' unions have not responded to the Minister's assurance till late evening. The unions, which met after the Minister's assurance, is likely to take a decision on whether or not to continue the indefinite strike on Thursday. Last month, the unions had gone on strike, but had subsequently withdrawn it after the port authorities brought down the toll charges by 30 per cent. At present, every truck that uses the road to enter or exit the port has to pay Rs 130 each time. The unions have said that the road is the only entrance to the port from the Pune expressway side. This time however, the unions have said the strike would be withdrawn only if the toll charges were totally abolished. It remains to be seen whether the Minister's assurance would cut ice with the striking unions.
