`Ensure quality of raw cashew nut imports'

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Oct. 6

ISSUES related to the quality of imported raw cashew nut and the Karnataka Government's encouragement to the cashew industry dominated the proceedings of the 50th annual general meeting of the Karnataka Cashew Manufacturers' Association (KCMA) in Mangalore recently.

Raising concerns over the quality, the members urged the association to initiate steps to ensure that manufacturers get good quality raw cashew nut for processing.

Processing units in Karnataka are largely dependent on imported raw cashew nut, as the State's production is not enough to meet the industry's demand.

Addressing the members, Mr K. Prakash Rao, KCMA President, said the processing capacity of manufacturers in Karnataka was on a steep increase, and there was need to facilitate the growth of the cashew crop in the State.

In this regard, the association and the Karnataka Government have taken up a massive campaign for producing additional one-lakh tonnes of raw cashew nut by 2012.

Terming this as a golden jubilee thrust project of the association, Mr Rao said this initiative was a resounding success.

He informed the meeting that the Karnataka Government had decided to distribute eight lakh cashew saplings through the member network of KCMA.

Mr Prakash Rao was re-elected President of the association for 2005-06. Other office bearers are: Mr D. Gopalkrishna Kamath (Vice-President); Mr Krishnananth P. Mallar (Treasurer); Mr B. Rahul Kamath (Secretary); Mr B. Subraya Pai (Joint-Secretary); and Mr Rajaram Bhat, Mr B. Sreenivas Kamath, Mr M. Vinayak Prabhu, Mr Kiran Kumar Kodgi, Mr B. Sreepathi Kamath, Mr M. Manjunath Prabhu, Mr S. Vittal Bhakta, Mr D. Gopinath Kamath, Mr K. Ganesh Kamath, Mr Nagaraj Bhat, Mr K. Pramod Kamath, and Mr B. Raghavendra Hemmana (members of the managing committee).
