Avon going beyond cosmetics, toiletries

Ambarish Mukherjee

The move follows ABPPL's decision to move beyond its traditional image of being a cosmetics and toiletries company.

New Delhi , Oct. 6

THE US-based direct marketing multinational Avon Product's Indian subsidiary, Avon Beauty Products Private Ltd (ABPPL), would be selling lingerie, novelty items, jewellery and watches to Indian homes through a direct marketing network.

The move follows ABPPL's decision to move beyond its traditional image of being a cosmetics and toiletries company and establish its presence in Indian homes more firmly with other personal use items.

Earlier this week, the company received the Government's approval to add more items to its product portfolio.

The company now sells colour cosmetics such as lipsticks, nail enamels, mascaras, blushers, skin care and suncare products, fragrances, shampoos and deodorants.

Avon Products Inc controls ABPPL through its two other US-based subsidiaries — Avon International Operations holds 90 per cent stake and Avon Capital Corporation the rest.

ABBPL also plans to introduce wellness products such as nutritional supplements and antioxidants in the domestic market for which it would have to seek Government's permission, official sources said.

However, for the new category of products permitted recently, the company is allowed only cash-and-carry wholesale trading, and is barred from undertaking retail trading in any form.
