KoPT using IT for higher operational efficiency

Our Correspondent

Kolkata , Oct. 7

KOLKATA Port Trust (KoPT) has started using information technology to simplify, automate and improve operational efficiency. It has launched projects worth over Rs 10 crore at its functional areas covering Kolkata Dock System (KDS) as well as Haldia Dock Complex (HDC).

The projects encompass the entire gamut of IT applications.

At KDS, eight IBM servers with around 300 clients have been installed. All these servers are connected with either leased or ISDN lines. The software applications are based on Oracle RDBMS and D2K application tools.

The applications range from payroll process to full-blown MIS.

Specialised applications such as biometric identification, document management system, geographic information system, vessel traffic management system, and video-conferencing and library information system have been installed.

At HDC, a 17-km fibre optic network backbone connecting offices and operational areas at the different points has been set up. The applications range from payroll processing to comprehensive information system.

The Kolkata port is connected with the outside world with its Web site and EDI system.

It has its own intranet site. An IT plan and data security policy has been framed to draw the roadmap of e-governance.
