Bangalore , Oct. 7

ULTRA mobile computers, with a mobile-like appearance, are set to hit the markets next year.

A prototype of the `ultra' mobile computer was showcased by Intel at the two-day Developer Forum that opened here on Thursday. The computer has a five-inch screen and weighs less than 500 gm.

Mr Gadi Singer, Vice-President and General Manager, Low Power IA and Tech Group at Intel, said the ultra mobile PC would be introduced in the first half of next year.

The ultra mobile PC has low power consumption. It can run continuously for an entire day. It has been designed to fit into a purse or a small handbag. It can be used to browse the Web, watch videos or movies, play music, and also for gaming. It is based on Intel's next generation mobile architecture that ensures low power utilisation along with improved performance.

Mr Singer also spoke of how functionality in mobiles was still rising. Of smart`er' phones, he said the company would be launching handset platform components.

He also spoke of dual core processors, demonstrating their performance as against single core processors. Dual core processor units would ramp up fast, he said, and advised the developer community to take advantage of this trend.
