Kerala has a network of waterways and navigable canals extending over a length of 1,600 km, the development of which has enormous potential for employment generation, tourism promotion, socio-economic development and also decongestion of roads and surface transport system. Its cheapness, eco-friendliness, fuel-efficiency and flexibility for transport of bulk cargo give it an upper hand over surface transport.
