Left parties hit out at Mulford's speech

THE Left parties that are providing outside support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government have taken serious note of the US Ambassador, Mr David C. Mulford's statement on foreign direct investment (FDI) in the insurance sector.
The four Left parties are unanimous in their view that the US has no business to intervene in the internal affairs of a sovereign country like India.
According to the Communist Party of India (CPI) leader, Mr D. Raja, "It is outright intervention in our internal affair. India has not made any commitment to anybody. Moreover, the whole insurance sector is controlled by the IRDA which has been created by an Act of Parliament."
"Who is he to talk about our insurance policy," Mr Raja asked.
The Forward Bloc too was critical on the issue. The party's secretary in charge of international affairs, Mr Devarajan, said, "We condemn the US for directly intervening in our internal affairs. The attitude of the Government towards the US has given them the chance to take us for granted."
The spokesman for the RSP said if an effort was made to raise the FDI limit in insurance, the party would vote against the Government in Parliament.
