More low-cost power for Kerala

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State will soon start getting 90 MW more of low-cost power from the eastern grid in appreciation of the fact that it has been supporting the costly naphtha-based thermal station of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at Kayamkulam against its own best interests.

The 360-MW NTPC station has been remaining idle for the last one year after naphtha became expensive in the international market.

According to Mr Aryadan Mohammed, Electricity Minister, the Union Ministry for Power and the NTPC had, in principle, agreed to extend this incentive to the State. The Chairman of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Mr T. M. Manoharan, had been sent to New Delhi for a discussion with the NTPC and the Union Power Ministry.

The new offer, which came up during the course of these discussions, is in addition to 90 MW of low-cost power the State had been getting from the Central pool from February this year as incentive.
