Element K to expand in Chennai

Raja Simhan T.E.

Chennai , Oct. 9

ELEMENT K, US-based company providing e-learning solutions, plans to double its headcount in Chennai to about 400 next year, according to Mr Madhav Patwardhan, Managing Director, Element K India Pvt Ltd, the wholly-owned subsidiary of the American company.

In January 2004, when it set up the Chennai development centre, around 175 employees of the e-learning arm of Sify Ltd, then Element K's preferred development partner, were shifted to the centre through a mutual agreement.

The Chennai centre is critical for the parent company's global operations. It rolls out e-learning courseware and develops software solutions for its parent company, Mr Patwardhan said.

The centre has developed around 200 courseware on different subjects. If a courseware has to be developed on Linux, an expert in the subject who has worked on the software explains how to use the software, and a content outline is developed.

Using graphics, animation and flash, audio, video and text, the courseware is made interactive to help students learn without teachers, he said.

Element K develops and publishes widely used training content in the industry, and makes it available to customers in multiple formats, including books, training manuals and licensed content in electronic form.

Its courseware is marketed directly to companies, Government agencies, and educational institutions, as well as indirectly through domestic and international resale and licensing agreements with partners, he added.

The company's customers include Eastman Kodak, Wachovia, and Toyota. It offers subscribers in over 140 countries access to more than 1,900 online courses on a wide range of IT, computing, compliance, and business management topics.

It is also an exclusive provider of Microsoft and Novell authorised online training. It integrates various forms of interaction into its e-learning offerings.
