New Delhi , Oct. 9

THE starting salary for students passing out fromcourses such as Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor of Computer Sciences (BCS) across the country has increased fourfold in the last five years, according to an Assocham (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry) Eco Pulse Study.

Most of the firms visiting university campuses for recruitment come from the IT and ITES sectors, says the study.

The feedback from different universities indicated that the starting salary for young recruits has gone up from Rs 2,500 in 2000 to Rs 10,000 in 2004.

As for the Bachelor in Computer Applications or B.Sc (Information Science) streams, salary levels have gone up to Rs 10,000-15,000 in the last two academic years 2003-04 and 2004-05.

To synchronise with the industry requirements, many of the universities have placement cells headed by a director who looks into employment of students and training programmes, reveals the study.

Some of the departments such as management studies have their own placement cells.

Companies from hospitality, banking and finance have started visiting institutions for campus recruitments.

The survey points out that the recruiters include Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, Dell Computers, iGate, ICICI Bank, CRISIL, ABN-Amro Bank, IDBI Bank and Standard Chartered Bank.
