FCRA must be scrapped: HelpAge India CEO

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 9

THE Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) should be done away with, as this legislation has outlived its utility in an era of liberalisation and globalisation, said Mr Mathew Cherian, CEO, HelpAge India.

Speaking at seminar on `NGOs— An Emerging Sector,' organised by the Northern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) here on Saturday, Mr Cherian said that the Act seeks to strangulate the growth of the voluntary sector.

Mr Cherian said that the Union Home Ministry was the biggest hindrance to the sector.

Further, the HelpAge India CEO said that non-government organisations (NGOs) are faced with the fundamental problems of diminished accountability and increased overheads.
