Audit systems

Mr S. Gurumurthy, auditor and convenor, Swadeshi Jagran Manch has countered the statement by the Union Finance Minister on the state of Indian audit and corporate governance ("Indian audit system is pathetic: Chidambaram," Business Line, October 10).

There is some truth to both views.

For one, the presence of the Big 4 audit firms did not prevent accounting scams — Worldcom, Tyco, Enron — from happening in the US.

On the other hand, what about us? No audit firm in India has wound up because of a scam nor have there been cases of CEOs ending up behind bars.

But this doesn't mean that CEOs and auditors are incapable of wrongdoing.
