Air India mulling maintenance facility in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram , Oct. 10

AN aircraft maintenance centre in Thiruvananthapuram is on the agenda of Air India, said Mr V. Thulasidas, Chairman and Managing Director.

The airline's decision to establish a maintenance facility in the city was contingent on Air India receiving free land at the Thiruvananthapuram airport, he said. Mr Thulasidas was speaking at the inauguration of the annual convention of the Trivandrum Management Association (TMA) in the city on Monday.

Expected to involve an investment of Rs 50 crore, the maintenance base is intended to service the airline's fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft. It will also be open to similar aircraft from other airlines.

Air India was also working out plans to launch a dedicated cargo service - for perishables - between Thiruvananthapuram and Dubai. Discussions with a private operator on the launch of this service were currently on, and the airline hoped to start the service by December, Mr Thulasidas said.

Pointing out that India is perceived as a growth market for aviation, Mr Thulasidas said that last year alone, Air India had expanded its capacity by between 25 and 26 per cent.

The airline's future growth was based on the acquisition of its new fleet. The Government of India is expected to soon approve the airline's plans to acquire new aircraft, he added.

Earlier, welcoming the gathering Mr M Ayyappan, President, TMA, pointed out that the theme of this year's convention was `management of infrastructure for capital region development'.

The convention is organised around three sub-themes - infrastructure requirement for capital region development, realising industry expectations and visioning for new projects and governance structures for capital region development.

Those who addressed the convention's inaugural session included Maj. General D.N. Khurana (Retired), Director General, All India Management Association, and Mr Om Bhatt, Managing Director, State Bank of Travancore.
