`Sight for Kids' programme

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Oct. 10

SIGHT for Kids', a joint initiative of the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF), World Health Organization (WHO) and Johnson & Johnson Ltd, which is focussed on elimination of childhood blindness, will be launched in Hyderabad on October 15.

The target group of the programme is children between 5-9 years and attending Government schools in Hyderabad and its surroundings. The President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, is expected to launch the initiative formally on October 15 in the city.

In addition to Hyderabad, the initiative is being launched in Kochi too. The LCIF and Johnson & Johnson have committed up to $745,000 spread over several years for the `Sight for Kids' programme.

Globally, under the project about 600,000 children in the Far East and South East Asia have been screened for eye diseases. Beginning 2004, the programme has been extended to India and China. More than a million children are expected to be screened annually.

In the Hyderabad project, the young children in Government, primary and aided schools would be screened for eye diseases, especially refractive errors. Free or subsidised one-time correction would be provided for those with significant refractive error (eye sight problem).

The Lions Eye Hospitals and the Government and Private sector Eye hospitals and institutes in Hyderabad are expected to provide training and service delivery under the project.

During the first year, at least 30 schools would be covered. The selection would be done through a consensus approach involving the service providers. Identified teachers would be provided special training at the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute.
