Centre may approve States' plans for own airlines

Hyderabad , Oct. 10

THE Union Ministry of Civil Aviation proposes to look into the proposals submitted by States interested in setting up their own airlines, according to the Civil Aviation Secretary, Mr Ajay Prasad.

Stating that a couple of States are currently exploring such possibilities, he said the Union Ministry has, however, not received definitive proposals from any of them so far.

He was responding to the queries of newspersons after performing first concrete pour for the Passenger Terminal Building at the Hyderabad International Airport Ltd near Shamshabad on the city outskirts here on Monday.

Stating that the Civil Aviation Ministry has been taking all the steps to improve operations by both the public and private airlines towards improving connectivity, Mr Prasad said if any State Government felt its requirements were not fully met and submits definitive proposal for own airlines, the Centre would consider it conforming to the policy requirements.

Mr Prasad denied reports that new airlines in the private sector were not being permitted to operate their flights. According to him, the Government has been making efforts to increase connectivity. Cities like Hyderabad and Bangalore were being included in the bilateral agreements being signed with the European Union and South East Asian countries.

Hyderabad is one of the fastest growing cities in the country with a greater need for connectivity and more airlines from abroad operating their flights from here.

According to Mr Prasad, this is also helping the Centre in its efforts to move away from the Mumbai and Delhi centric traffic on international routes. He made it clear that the Begumpet airport would not be allowed for scheduled flights after the completion of the new international airport at Shamshabad.

The airport in the city centre will be used for the requirements of the civil aviation and Indian Air Force. The Begumpet airport will be used as a training ground for civil and IAF flights, apart from handling the VVIP flights, Mr Prasad said.
