Tuticorin port cargo handling up

THE Tuticorin port handled 87.73 lakh tonnes of cargo for the half year ended September 2005, compared to 76.82 lakh tonnes for the corresponding period last year, an increase of 14.20 per cent.

Imports accounted for 69.64 lakh tonnes and exports 18.09 lakh tonnes, with increase in imports of 19.06 per cent and decrease in exports of 1.31 per cent. The decrease was due to absence of wheat and iron ore, according to a press release issued by the Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT).

The number of vessels handled from April to September 2005 was 784 (711), an increase of 10.27 per cent.

Container traffic during the first half of the fiscal was 1.57 lakh TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) compared to 1.52 lakh TEUs, an increase of 2.96 per cent, the release said.

During September 2005, the port handled 15.28 lakh tonnes (13.27 lakh tonnes), an increase of 15.15 per cent.

Imports during the month were 12.01 lakh tonnes and exports were 3.27 lakh tonnes.
