NMPT cargo handling up 12 pc in H1

THE New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has handled 17.67 million tonnes (mt) of cargo in the first half of the current fiscal against 15.76 mt during the corresponding previous period, registering a growth of 12.09 per cent.

Speaking to newspersons on recently, Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, said that liquid bulk constituted 67 per cent of the cargo.

The LPG tonnage handled by the port was the maximum among the major ports in the country. Added to this, there has been significant growth in the traffic of POL (petroleum, oil and liquid) crude and products.

Fertiliser and coal were the other major contributors for the traffic growth. The fertiliser cargo registered a growth of 133.99 per cent during the period under review. Iffco and Kribhco are the major importers of fertiliser cargo at Mangalore, he said.

Stating that the coal cargo recorded a growth of 53.83 per cent, he said that some of the vessels containing coal cargo were diverted from other ports to Mangalore during the period.

Iron ore fines and lumps, one of the major export commodities from the port, registered 67.75 per cent growth. The port handled 35.83 lakh tonnes of iron ore fines and lumps against 21.35 lakh tonnes earlier. However, the export of iron ore concentrates and pellets registered a negative growth of 23.84 per cent, Mr Tamilvanan said. Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd exports iron ore concentrates and pellets.
