IA to take 12 aircraft on dry lease

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi , Oct. 12

INDIAN Airlines has decided to take on dry-lease up to 12 wide-body aircraft for five to seven years. The airline is to choose from Airbus A 310-300, A-330 and A-340, apart from Boeing 767 Extended Range and B-777.

IA, which plans to induct these aircraft during a one-year time frame starting January 2006, could see its route network expand into new territories in Europe and Saudi Arabia. The airline not only plans to utilise these aircraft to expand operations to existing destinations in East Asia, but it is also examining the option of operating to some new cities there.

"The destinations that the airline will decide on will depend on the availability of aircraft. But it is possible that we would look at increasing flights to Singapore and going a little beyond," a senior airline official said.

The Government has already designated IA to operate flights to Australia, the UK and the US. Besides, the airline has received permission to commence operations to the UK. IA already operates to Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal and several cities in the Gulf region.

The aircraft that the airline is to take on lease are likely to have multi-channel audio and video systems as well as other equipment that would show the route that the flight is taking. At present, the aircraft that IA uses for international operations do not offer passengers multi-channel audio and video systems.

The decision to go in for aircraft for five to seven years is a departure from the past when IA planned to take on lease aircraft for three-to-five years.
