BEML, Korean co Rotem tie up to build aerobridges

Bangalore , Oct. 12

BHARAT Earth Movers Ltd has signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korea's Rotem for the manufacture and marketing of aerobridges deployed at airport terminals.

Rotem has supplied aerobridges to airports in South Korea and outside. There will be a demand for 58 passenger aerobridges in the next three-four years due to the boom in the civil aviation sector and with the greenfield airport projects coming up at Bangalore and Hyderabad and the proposed expansion and modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports, a BEML release said.

The new international airports coming up at Bangalore and Hyderabad alone will each require 10 aerobridges and the rest of the business is expected from other airports apart from after-sales-service and supply of spares.

The MoU was signed by the BEML Chairman and Managing Director, Mr V.R.S. Natarajan, and the Rotem Vice-Chairman and CEO, Dr Soon-Won Chung, in Bangalore on Tuesday.

"The signing of this agreement heralds the beginning of a new chapter in BEML-Rotem relationship - which has extended from the metro (rail coach) rolling stock for both broad and standard gauges to the new portfolio of air force/civil aviation business," BEML said.

The Defence sector PSU supplies civil and military aviation equipment such as crash fire tender, aircraft towing tractor and weapon loading system.
