Iron ore operators in Dakshina Kannada seek higher rentals

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Oct. 12

IRON ore lorry operators in Dakshina Kannada district, who are on an indefinite strike from October 3, have sought hike in rentals.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr Shashikiran, President of the Dakshina Kannada District Mines Lorry Owners' Association, said that for a lorry carrying 10 tonnes of iron ore Rs 900 a tonne is being paid as rental. This should be increased at least to Rs 1,200 a tonne.

The increase in the prices of diesel and spare parts has made the tasks of lorry operators difficult, he said.

The Joint Secretary of the association, Mr Sudhakar, said that nearly 800 lorries in the district are involved in the transportation of iron ore from the mines in Bellary-Hospet region to New Mangalore Port.

Stating that the lorry operators are paying huge amount as road tax, he urged the Government to take steps for better maintenance of roads in the region.

Seeking the Government's intervention to increase rentals, he said that otherwise the operators would intensify their agitation.
