CCMB to make nano-biotech foray

M. Somasekhar

Hyderabad , Oct. 12

INFECTIOUS diseases and nano-biotechnology will be two new areas of focus for the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB).

The institute is foraying into nano-biotechnology with a separate facility and trained manpower.

With the growing importance of nano-technology, it should be prudent to look into the opportunities it offers in tapping biotechnology as well, said Dr Lalji Singh, Director of CCMB.In the health care area, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the parent organisation of CCMB, has asked us to take up research in infectious diseases, he told Business Line.

Infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Japanese Encephalitis (JE), SARS and others common in India would be the target for the research efforts, he said.

To facilitate accelerated research, CSIR has agreed to set up five biological containment level III centres.

These facilities, which are to be coordinated by the CCMB, will come up in IICB, Kolkata; IMTECH, Chandigarh; RRL, Jammu; CDRI, Lucknow and the CCMB, here.

The five facilities are to be ready by December 2005 and they will be linked with a transparent exchange of knowledge and resources.

This would help us carry out lots of research work on infectious diseases, Dr Lalji said.

At the CCMB itself, a more advanced biological containment level-IV facility has been proposed.

Land for the purpose has already been allocated by the Andhra Pradesh Government.

The Rs 145-crore proposal is pending with the Union Department of Science and Technology. CSIR has already given its green signal and has agreed to provide some funds.

Similarly, several drug and pharma industries have shown their willingness to use the facilities, Dr Singh said.
