Development decisions must hold water

There is an ongoing, serious debate on the proposal to beautify the Gateway of India.

The July floods in Mumbai have sparked a serious public debate on the call to stop developmental activities at the Bandra-Kurla complex.

It has been pointed out that the Mithi river estuary is being narrowed with the laying of the Bandra-Worli seaway.

One hopes that Chennai will also learn a few useful lessons without waiting for a natural calamity such as the Mumbai floods to happen here. Chennai needs, therefore, to revisit the proposals which have a bearing on its waterways.
