Chennai , Oct 14

THE Tamil Nadu Government has announced a 6 per cent wage hike to the employees of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) representing an increase of Rs 600 to Rs 2,235, according to an official press release.

Along with the wage hike a new productivity agreement will also be implemented.

The wage settlement is for the December 1, 2002 to November 30, 2007 period. The hike is over the basic pay drawn on December 1, 2002, after the previous wage settlement, which ended on November 30, 2002.

The wage hike represents an additional expense of Rs 6 crore a year to the electricity board.

The maximum limit of the existing scales of pay will be elongated by six stages. The house rent allowance, city allowance and special pay will be at prevailing percentages.

For the two years between the two wage settlements the Government has announced a consolidated payment of Rs 2,400 per employee. This means the TNEB will have to shell out Rs 22.50 crore.

The Government has also announced a service benefit of one additional increment over the hike to those in service for more than 15 years as on December 1, 2002.

The arrears of wage hike will be paid after compensating for the interim relief of Rs 250 a month paid from September 1, 2003.

The total arrears will mean an additional expense of Rs 419.35 crore to the TNEB and a recurring annual expenditure of Rs 160.80 crore, according to the release.

The wages of 3,316 women employees working as part time conservancy workers in the TNEB have been hiked to Rs 850 a month from Rs 250.

The settlement follows a meeting of the union leaders and officials of the TNEB with the Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa. She urged the workers to accept the settlement and the union leaders to sign the wage settlement on Saturday at the meeting with the Minister for Electricity and Transport.

In another press release the State Government announced a 20 per cent bonus consisting of 8.33 per cent bonus and 11.67 per cent ex-gratia for 2004-05 to employees of public sector undertakings covering the transport corporations, TNEB, Aavin, Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) and Poompuhar Shipping Corporation.

This will mean an expenditure of Rs 66.44 crore for the transport corporations, Rs 44 crore for the TNEB, Rs 6.87 crore for the TNCSC, Rs 1.53 crore for Aavin and Rs 7.20 lakh for the Poompuhar Shipping Corporation.
