Hanwha L&C may set up manufacturing unit in India

Chennai , Oct. 14

HANWHA L&C, a part of the $6-billion Korean Hanwha Group, may set up its own manufacturing unit in India if the domestic market proves conducive to its range of products, according to Mr D.K. Jha, Senior Manager, Hanwha Chemical Corporation, a group company.

The company has introduced a range of unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) window systems, acrylic solid surfaces with a combination of aluminium mineral and 100 per cent acrylic-based resin and PVC flooring with UV coating. These products are currently imported from Korea.

Mr Jha said the company expected the demand for these products to grow, as there was a construction boom in the country.

In Chennai, for instance, about 70,000 sq ft of residential space has been committed, which would translate into an equal demand for flooring tiles. (This demand would be shared among granite, ceramic, marble, mosaic and PVC flooring.) The prices for the flooring material range from Rs 7 to Rs 300 per sq ft, he said.

The uPVC window systems have higher resistance to heat, cold, moisture, rain and pollution. Their price starts at Rs 250 per sq ft. These windows are custom-made and fabricated at the company's unit in Mumbai. There are plans to set up a fabrication unit in Chennai too, he said.

The acrylic-based solid surfaces can be used in bathrooms, as kitchen counters, study table, bar tops and food service counters. The price ranges from Rs 750 to Rs 1,000 per sq ft.

The company has appointed Kumar Distributors as distributors for South India, he said.
