The Hindu Business Line : Jet Airways plans to buy 12 aircraft

JET Airways has drawn up a flight acquisition plan envisaging procurement of 12 aircraft of the 737-category in the next three years for domestic flights.

Mr Peter Leuthe, Chief Operating Officer of Jet Airways, said orders were placed for ten 777s and ten A330s, which will be delivered from 2007.

"We intend to consolidate our presence in the Indian aviation sector in a phased manner," he said, while speaking at function organised here to mark the 101st birth anniversary celebrations of JRD Tata. Mr Leuthe said although the Indian aviation industry was growing fast, there were some areas of challenge and concern. "By 2009, after Air India and Indian Airlines' acquisition programme, India will have the youngest fleet in the world. But, at the same time, today it takes four days to get an aircraft off an airfield. This shows that a lot of work has to be done," he pointed out.

Mr Leuthe said the cost of ATF in India was about 60 per cent higher than most places in the world.

He pointed out that there was a 10 per cent custom duty on imported ATF, 8.16 per cent Central excise duty and four to 39 per cent State Government sales tax. Due to this, the fuel cost works out to 30 per cent of the operating cost in India, while in the rest of the world it was between 12 and 15 per cent.
