Canara Bank picks Red Hat OS for branches

Bangalore , Oct 17

RED Hat Inc on Monday announced that Canara Bank has selected its operating system to automate 1,000 of its 2,508 branches in the country.

Canara Bank has replaced the Novell Netware operating system (OS) with Red Hat's flagship OS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, version four (RHEL 4).

RHEL 4 will be deployed on more than 1,000 servers and 10,000 desktops.

Mr Sachin Dabir, Head of Enterprise Sales, Red Hat, said: "The bank chose Linux so that they could reuse hardware. Other advantages include new functionality, as well as better performance and security."

The company will provide training and help desk services to the bank for the deployment and sustenance of the project. Key factors behind Canara Bank selecting Red Hat's distro (brand of Linux OS) were "reliable support and professional services and consulting," said a release issued by the company.

Canara Bank has already developed a branch automation software in-house, called Total Branch Automation (TBA).

This software has been ported on to Linux by the bank's IT arm, CanBank Computer Services Ltd.

Canara Bank officials said: "TBA modernisation is an important project for us and we have chosen Red Hat Enterprise Linux as our platform for this project. We are very happy with it."

In August, Canara Bank picked up iFlex's Flexcube core banking solution and chose IBM to implement it. The deal was estimated to be around Rs 250 crore. In the first phase 1,053 branches were selected for implementation of the core banking solution.
