AP Govt urged to take steps to prevent flooding at Vizag airport

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Oct. 18

VISAKHA Air Travellers' Association here has appealed to the State Government to initiate steps immediately for "safeguarding the airport area from inundation whenever there are heavy rains or cyclones."

This step, the association pointed out, would not only

make life easier for air travellers, but also attract more investment to the city.

In a petition to the Principal Secretary, the municipal administration, the association said that as a coastal area Visakhapatnam is bound to experience cyclones and heavy rains on a fairly regular basis and therefore the airport needs to be protected.

The irrigation department has prepared a Rs 29-crore scheme for diversion of floodwaters from Meghadrigedda and Kondagedda into the ocean and it should be taken up immediately, Mr D.S. Varma, the secretary of the association, said in the petition.

The association found fault with the officials of the irrigation department for not giving prior intimation, last week, before discharging floodwaters from Meghadrigedda reservoir.

"The situation should have been foreseen and damage to the property could have been lessened with prior intimation."

It may be noted that Visakhapatnam airport is still under water and there have been no flights since Friday.
