Kolkata , Oct. 18

NRS Publications, publishers of Poultry Fortune, a monthly magazine on the Rs 15,000-crore poultry industry will organise the Ninth Poultry Expo here on October 20 and 21. The expo will include a two-day exhibition and conference on the national poultry industry.

According to Mr M.A. Nazeer, editor and publisher of Poultry Fortune, Eastern Region, West Bengal was the largest consumer of chicken meat and egg. The consumption in the region is growing by 15-20 per cent annually.

The State, therefore, was likely to attract substantial investment in this sector in the short- and medium-run. While Sugana has already started contract farming in the State, another southern poultry major Venkateswara Hatcheries is currently exploring the prospects of entering the State in a big way.

Talking on export opportunity, Mr Nazeer said the outbreak of bird-flu in several South Asian countries had opened up opportunities for the Indian poultry sector. Allaying fears of an outbreak of the disease in the country, he said the farm management practices in India were not only different but also much better than those followed in South East Asian countries like Thailand and Indonesia.
