Bangalore Intl Airport begins selecting key commercial partners

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Oct. 18

BANGALORE International Airport Ltd (BIAL) on Tuesday said it had begun the process of selecting its key commercial partners in airport operations.

The company, which started construction at the Devanahalli site in July this year, said it would soon start issuing tenders to select concessionaires who would operate the aviation fuel facility, ground handling, cargo terminal at the airport, besides flight catering and aircraft maintenance.

The first tender planned for this month-end would invite bids from international and domestic fuel companies for the all-important aviation fuel facility on BOOT basis.

BIAL said it would follow the open access model, which means that any supplier/marketer of jet fuel has the right to access the fuel facility against a fixed throughput fee.

The tenders for ground handling and cargo are scheduled for November, followed by the concessions for flight catering and aircraft maintenance.

The Chief Commercial Officer, Mr Stephan Widrig, said: "Competition between airport service providers is seen as the best model to ensure quality, efficiency and continuous innovation of airport services. BIAL will not offer any of those services itself that can be provided under a competition model nor will it participate in these joint ventures. BIAL will focus on selecting the right partner and the concession management."

The airport is planned for opening in April 2008.
