Letters Education loans
This is with reference to the article, "New pvt banks lag behind in granting education loans in Kerala", (Business Line, October 19). Private sector banks lag behind in granting education loans not only in Kerala but in the other States as well. They conveniently forget that they too have social obligations. Despite the clarion call given by the Finance Minister, the quantum of priority sector loans, including education loans, granted by the new generation banks and MNC banks is minuscule compared to that granted by the public sector banks. This is because the priorities and target levels of these banks are different. Even some MNC banks, such as Deutsche Bank, which had closed down their retail business, have recently come back to India. We can, however, be certain that their portfolios will not include education loans. The Government should check this trend. The banks should be made to adhere to the percentage norms of actual release of such loans, without escaping through loopholes. Tharcius S. Fernando, Chennai
