Independent directors

This is with reference to the article, "Regulators may have say on more independent directors: Company Law to set minimum number", (Business Line, October 19).

What if the provision is used to appoint politicians as independent directors? The medicine may turn out to be worse than the disease. There are reports already that seven members of the Congress party were appointed on the boards of six public sector banks.

What is important is to specify qualifications for the independent directors.
