IT for poll contestants

According to a TV news channel, several of the contestants in the Bihar Assembly elections have declared family incomes exceeding Rs 1 crore per annum. It will be interesting to know if they have declared this in their income-tax returns and paid their taxes.

The Election Commission should make it mandatory for contestants to submit a certificate from the Income Tax Department that they have no arrears of income-tax, for their nomination to be accepted.

In case they declare it as agricultural income and thus should be exempt from income-tax, the Finance Minister should rethink exempting such huge amounts from tax. Why should the state provide free power to such high-income individuals?
