Events Company Secretaries' convention begins today Our Bureau
Chennai , Oct. 19 THE Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) has been trying to globalise the profession through various activities, such as urging the Commerce Ministry to lobby at the WTO forum for the inclusion of a new head for corporate governance and company secretarial services under the services sectoral classification list of the WTO, according to Mr R. Ravi, President, ICSI. He said the ICSI has a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), UK, and has an in-principle agreement that an ICSI member who acquires an ICSA membership can opt to be a member of the ICSA in other countries such as Singapore, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Mr N. K. Jain, Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, ICSI, told Business Line that the role of the company secretary in a globalised economy is important. He said when a company is looking to set up shop in another country, a professional who is already placed in that market can give you in-depth insight into the market, provide information on country-specific laws, and can help in help in various tasks such as raising funds from the capital market, and getting the company listed in that country's stock exchange. These issues and more will be dealt with in ICSI's 33rd convention, to be held in Chennai on October 20 and 21.
