bmi to increase Mumbai-London flights

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Oct. 19

BMI, the British carrier which commenced direct services between Mumbai and London in May 2005, plans to step up its frequency to a daily service from April next. It currently operates a four-times-a-week service between the two cities.

According to Mr Ravi Pikle, Commercial Development Manager, India & Middle East, bmi, loads on this sector for October would average around 65 per cent.

He admitted that the increase in capacity on the India-UK sector, following the deregulation of the air services pact between the two countries, had brought down both fares and yields. And while there was scope for yields to drop further, he said the airline's services remained profitable.

Mr Nigel Turner, Chief Executive Officer, British Midland Plc, the parent company of bmi, said the airline planned to expand its services to other cities in India, though he did not specify the prospective destinations.

He added that the downtrend in fares would stimulate markets and encourage travellers.
