LG gears up to expand AC market

Chennai , Oct. 20

LG Electronics India plans to expand and consolidate the market for air-conditioners, according to Mr Ajay Bajaj, Product Group Head, (Air Conditioners), LG Electronics India Pvt. Ltd.

The company will increase its ad spend on air-conditioners to Rs 60 crore next year from Rs 45 crore in 2005. The company has launched the Whisen brand experience zone in Chennai, which will showcase its entire range. LG plans to have 20 such showrooms by the end of this year. These `experience zones' have been opened to meet the challenges of an increasingly mature retail environment in the country, Mr Bajaj said.

He said LG has a 40 per cent share of the Rs 2,500-crore air-conditioner market in India. India is going through a boom period in air-conditioners which is growing at a rate of about 25 per cent. But the penetration level remains just 1 per cent, Mr Bajaj said.

The market is also shifting towards split ACs as people prefer to keep the windows free. The noise levels of window ACs is about 52 decibels while that of split ACs is 20. Another reason for the increasing popularity of splits is reduced price differential.

The 1.5-tonne AC is the category driver, he said.
