WHILE the matter of television rights for next four years is sub judice, the BCCI marketing committee has taken an interim decision to ensure television coverage of the seven-match India-Sri Lanka series and five-match India-South Africa series, according to a media release issued here today.
The ICC directive makes television coverage essential for any international match.
The marketing committee felt that in order to reach out to the largest possible Indian audience, the national broadcaster would be the best possible option for the Indian terrestrial and cable rights. More so because same arrangements were made by the board in 2004 also under similar circumstances.
"An offer was received from Prasar Bharti for Rs 7 crore per match for the Indian broadcasting rights. In view of this the committee today further negotiated with Prasar Bharati and ensured that Rs 7.5 crore per match would be paid to the board for these rights."
In the production part while the Board had received an offer from Trans World International (TWI) for the two series, the attention of the marketing committee was also drawn to an offer for production by Nimbus Sport that was filed along with the intervening application by Rajasthan Cricket Association and Punjab Cricket Association in the case filed by Zee Telefilms against the Board.
The committee considered both the offers and noted that Nimbus Sport had quoted a production cost of $1.95 million as against $1.54 million by TWI. The difference was of $0.41 million.
"Since there was a difference of nearly Rs 1.7 crore, the marketing committee decided that the responsibility for television production for both the series should be given to TWI."
