Diabetes rampant in Hyderabad: Study

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Oct. 20

HYDERABAD has now clearly emerged as the diabetic capital in India, according to a latest study conducted by Dr Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre.

The centre's Chairman, Dr V. Mohan, told newspersons that the study showed that 21.5 per cent of adults over 20 years of age in Hyderabad now have diabetes.

The alarming observation is that Hyderabad is growing fast in diabetes prevalence rate among the metros of the country. The earlier study conducted in Hyderabad during 2001 revealed a prevalence rate of 16.6 per cent.

The study titled `Diabetes Awareness Survey in Hyderabad' was conducted in seven major circles of the twin cities on a random sample of 1,007 individuals.

The study revealed that nearly 43 per cent of Hyderabadis were unaware of a condition called diabetes.

Only five per cent of the surveyed individuals knew that sedentary lifestyle (physical inactivity) was a risk factor for diabetes.

According to Dr Mohan, the facts of the study stressed the importance of spreading awareness about diabetes among the public.

Having organised three major awareness programmes in Chennai during the last seven years where over six lakh people attended the exhibitions, the centre now plans a similar mega event at Hyderabad.

The exhibition would be held from December 15 to 18 at Sathya Sai Nigamagamam here with over 25 theme stalls.
