Shakti engine completes first test run

Bangalore , Oct. 21

THE Ardiden/Shakti aero-engine for HAL's advanced light helicopter has completed its first test run, according to a release from HAL's French engine partner, Turbomeca.

The first successful run on test bench is a significant milestone for Turbomeca and opens the window for development and test phases, the company said. This will be followed by the first flight in July 2006 and then by CASA certification in December 2006.

The Ardiden/Shakti engine is designed to meet the ALH's demanding missions at high altitudes and hot conditions. The Ardiden 1H engine is called Shakti in India.

Several hundred engines will be produced in the next 10 years to power HAL's twin-engine ALH or Dhruv, which is slated to enter Defence service in March 2007.

The engine is being developed by Turbomeca, a SAFRAN group company, and HAL under an industrial partnership contract signed in February 2003.
