Consulting Logistics - Infrastructure 4 US consultants in fray for designing Abu Dhabi airport's mega terminal Vimala Vasan
Abu Dhabi , Oct. 21 ABU Dhabi is planning a mega terminal to handle 20 million passengers a year upon completion. The design of the Abu Dhabi International Airport's (ADIA) multi-billion dirham mega Midfield Terminal Complex will be unveiled in December, following an international competition which involves some of the world's biggest design specialists, according to a statement issued here. The airport panel SCADIA has received proposals from four major international design consultants for terminal. Earmarked to handle 20 million passengers a year upon completion in 2010, the facility is part of the ambitious Dh 21 billion ($6.8 billion) redevelopment of ADIA. SCADIA has shortlisted Skidmore Owings and Merrill LLP (SOM), Hellmuth, Obata+Kassabaum Inc (HOK), Fentress Bradburn Architects and Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. The four US firms have entered into a competition and a jury comprising international architects and aviation experts will select the best design on December 5. "Abu Dhabi's rapid development into a major regional business, commercial and tourism hub warrants the creation of best-of-breed airport infrastructure, which will be the gateway for the emirate's future growth, and the mega Midfield Terminal Complex has to be an iconic embodiment of the ambitious plans for the UAE's capital," said Mr Khalifa Al Mazrouei, Chairman, SCADIA. The multi-phase redevelopment would double the existing airport's land area to 3,400 hectares. A second Category III runway will be built 2,000 metres north of the current runway. By 2010, Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi-headquartered national carrier of the UAE and ADIA's home airline, will have 50 wide-bodied aircraft and will take delivery of its first A380 by early 2008.
