Pune , Oct. 21 THE Pune-based International Institute for Information Technology (I2IT) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Italy's International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) for conducting training workshops for professionals/students from developing countries. Announcing this here, Dr Bharat Chowdhary, Director, Workshop on Wireless Technology, said this was the first such workshop in India. In the first phase, I2IT and ICTP will set up training workshops in China, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Pakistan and other developing countries in the area of Wireless Technologies, Networking and Telecommunications, he said. Dr Chowdhary said the tie-up also entailed exchange of faculty, staff and students between I2IT and ICTP. Besides, as a collaborative professional development program, exchange of publications, reports and other academic information will take place between I2IT and ICTP, he said. He said I2IT with assistance from ICTP would organise special educational programs for students from developing countries, including graduate studies. I2IT will be a focal point for contacts to Indian industries for collaborative projects with ICTP. Founded in 1964 by Abdus Salam (Nobel Laureate), the Centre operates under a tripartite agreement among the Italian Government and two United Nations Agencies - UNESCO and IAEA. Its mission is to foster advanced studies and research, especially in developing countries. While the name of the Centre reflects its beginnings, its activities today encompass most areas of physical sciences including applications.
