Bangalore , Oct. 21

THE need to type faster is growing in importance for Indians, according to a survey on text-messaging trends among mobile users.

The US-based Tegic Communications, a subsidiary of America Online, conducted a nationwide analysis of texting trends among Indian cellphone users with Continental Research.

The findings showed that 25 per cent of the subscribers use predictive text input (such as T9) to speed text entry. T9 text input software is the flagship product of Tegic Communications, and is available in more than 49 languages, said the release issued by the company. In India, T9 is available for Urdu, Tamil, Punjabi and Bengali. The company will launch two more languages by the year-end. This software, licensed to consumer electronics and communications equipment manufacturers worldwide, is incorporated in more than 800 models of cell phones.

. "One driver of T9 in India for mobile SMS has been the linkage between hit Indian TV shows and mobile users for interactivity," explained Mr Mridul Srivastava, Senior Country Manager (India), Tegic Communications.
