New Delhi , Oct. 21

THE Government announced on Saturday that it has decided to import onions through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) to protect consumers interest. This move comes in the wake of the increase in prices in some cities. An inter-ministerial meeting chaired by the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, reviewed the production, storage and availability of onions.

The latest review revealed a significant upward rise in onion prices since October 17, 2005.
