Biofuel policy

This refers to the article, `Biofuel policy: Lukewarm response from industry' (Business Line, October 20). Prior to the announcement of the biodiesel policy, the Petroleum Minister, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, should have consulted the Minister for agriculture and also the various state governments.

Also, the pricing structure — Rs 25 per litre — is vague as it doesn't say whether this is for the crude biofuel oil or the tranesterified oil.

Eminent scientist Dr M. S. Swaminathan should play a vital role in framing the policy as he heads the National Farmer's Commission.

One is shocked at the failure of our planners to envisage the impending oil crisis in the not-too-distant future despite several warnings by various think-tanks.

Oil companies such as IOC should adopt as many villages as possible to raise tree-borne oilseeds cultivation.

One hopes that all political leaders will join hands and frame suitable renewable-energy policies. The government should also encourage foreign direct investment in oilseeds cultivation, to aid the move towards biofuel.
