`Labelling fireworks must to avoid mishaps'

Our Bureau

Chennai , Oct. 23

FIREWORKS should be labelled for different age groups, according to Dr K. Mathangi Ramakrishnan, Secretary, Burns Association of India.

Speaking about the safety factor with regard to Diwali, Dr Ramakrishnan said that during the festival season the hospitals gear up to treat people with burns from firework mishaps.

She said that over the last 30 years, the number of burns that occur during and after the festival have increased by 30 per cent with rising expenditure on fireworks.

The habit of piling up all the fireworks-garbage (which sometimes includes unlit crackers that are still potentially dangerous) and making a bonfire, can harm the face, especially the eyes. Scavenging and removing of such garbage should be high priority, Dr Ramakrishnan.

The Burns Association is endeavouring to raise awareness of these problems and has spoken to the City Police Commissioner, Mr R. Natraj, who has been receptive, according to her.
