Software Marketing - New Products & Services OpenOffice new version Pratap Ravindran
Pune , Oct. 23 OPENOFFICE.ORG has released version 2 of OpenOffice after a thorough revamp of the open-source software suite, which is rapidly becoming a threat to Microsoft Office. The suite features a word processor, spreadsheet, a presentation creator - and a database. Over 50 million copies of OpenOffice have been downloaded so far - and more downloads are expected with Google promising its help in the distribution after its pact with Sun. Sun is the primary sponsor of OpenOffice, which also has programming support from Red Hat, Novell, Intel, Propylon and a bunch of independent developers. Observers say that OpenOffice has a range of advantages, compared to MS Office. For one thing, it is free. Unlike MS Office, it runs on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and Sun's Solaris - and it looks and works the same, regardless of the platform.
