Mumbai , Oct. 23

INDIA is a strategically important market for Sony Corporation, said its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Howard Stringer.

But, Mr Stringer did not spell out the plans the electronics and entertainment major has for India.

Sony is in the midst of a reconstruction, globally. Mr Stringer said the company aimed to establish itself as a vertical entity from a horizontal one.

Sony's global vision is to synergise stand-alone business. In terms of business opportunities, Sony Corp would look at high definition area. "We have to grow in the digital world. We see a great opportunity in high definition area," Mr Stringer told delegates to a FICCI meeting.

Sony is looking at high definition television, blue ray disc and other products.

He said that efforts would be made to improve the equity of Sony Entertainment Television, which is now at second position in the broadcast scenario in India.
